Dr Jacqueline (Jackie) Reznik, PhD

Jackie is an esteemed physiotherapist, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at James Cook University in Townsville, and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, School of Medicine. With a career spanning over five decades, Dr Reznik has made significant contributions to clinical practice and academic research in physiotherapy.

Dr Reznik earned her PhD in Physiotherapy from James Cook University, where she focused on the treatment and management of neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO). Her groundbreaking research in this area has led to innovative treatment approaches, including the use of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), which has shown great promise for patients with compromised mobility and neurological trauma (12).

Throughout her career, Dr Reznik has held various academic and clinical positions, including Senior Lecturer at Central Queensland University and Honorary Research Associate at Curtin University. She has also been an Honorary Associate at University College London’s Institute of Child Health (12).

Dr Reznik is widely recognised for her expertise in neurological physiotherapy and has delivered over 150 workshops internationally. She has published extensively, including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and co-editing textbooks such as “Pharmacology for Physiotherapists” and "Rehabilitation of the Spinal Cord Injured Patient" (2).

In addition to her academic and clinical work, Dr Reznik is a dedicated member of several professional organizations, including the Australian Physiotherapy Association and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (1). Her commitment to advancing the field of physiotherapy and improving patient outcomes continues to inspire her colleagues and students alike.

Dr Reznik’s extensive experience and dedication to research and education make her a highly respected figure in the field of physiotherapy.

Mary Galea

Professorial Fellow in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. She is also the Academic Director of the Australian Rehabilitation Research Centre at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (12).

Professor Galea’s research focuses on the control of movement and the factors underlying recovery from nervous system injuries. She has led significant research programs, including the Spinal Cord Injury and Physical Activity (SCIPA) initiative, which investigates the effects of exercise on recovery after spinal cord injury (12). Her work has been instrumental in developing innovative rehabilitation strategies, such as the use of robotic devices and gaming technology for intensive hand and arm therapy following neurological injuries (2).

In addition to her research, Professor Galea is actively involved in various professional organizations. She is a Board Member of the Spinal Injury Network, a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of SpinalCure Australia, and a Patron of the Stroke Association of Victoria (1). She also contributes to global health initiatives through her involvement with the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) (1).

Professor Galea’s contributions to the field have been recognised with numerous awards, including her induction into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2014 and being named a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019 (2). Her dedication to advancing rehabilitation science and improving patient outcomes continues to inspire her colleagues and students alike.
