The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights outlines what you can expect from us as we deliver services and treatment to you. The video below explains your healthcare rights.



The Charter outlines seven fundamental rights:

You have the right to:

Access

  • Healthcare services and treatment which meet your needs.

Safety

  • Receive high quality, safe treatment which meets Australian standards.

  • Be treated in an environment which makes you feel safe.

Respect

  • Be treated as an individual, with dignity and respect.

  • Have your culture, identity, beliefs and choices recognised and respected.

Partnership

  • Ask questions and be involved in open and honest communication.

  • Make decisions with your healthcare provider, to the extent you choose.

  • Include the people you want to in your planning and decision-making process.

Information

  • Clear information about your condition, the benefits and risks of various treatments, so you can provide informed consent.

  • Receive information about services, waiting times and costs.

  • Be provided assistance, as needed, to help you understand and use health information.

  • Access your health information.

  • Be informed if something went wrong during treatment, how it happened, how it may affect you and what action is being taken to ensure treatment is safe.

Privacy

  • Have your personal privacy respected.

  • Have information about you and your health stored securely and kept confidential.

Give Feedback

  • Provide feedback or make a complaint without it affecting the way you are treated.

  • Have your concerns addressed in a transparent and timely manner.

  • Share your experience and participate to improve the quality of care and health services.
