Description

This one day interactive workshop will aim to further build your understanding of the Motivational Interviewing Framework and support skills development to help engage clients and guide conversations toward client’s recovery goals. The workshop is developed for clinicians with a prior introductory level knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and is designed as an interactive and skills-based learning experience to further extend you application in your work.


What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

“Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centred way of talking with people about change and personal growth, to strengthen the person's own intrinsic motivation and commitment to change.”
(Miller and Rollnick, 2023).


Workshop Goals

  • Expand on key MI concepts and framework to support clinicians to meet clients where they are in the change process as they work toward recovery goals:

    • 
The spirit of MI


    • Core communication skills


    • Processes of change

    • Change talk

  • Skills development focus – adding complexity to Reflections and Questions focused on eliciting change language.

  • Working with challenging clients – using reflections and a strengths approach

  • Collaboratively developing plans for between sessions – expanding the elicit, provide, elicit model
.

  • Opportunity to review one or two complex case presentations, with collaborative treatment planning.


Professional Development

Attendance certificates will be provided.

Given the training is delivered by registered clinical psychologists, other registered psychologists may choose to record the training as part of their active professional development.


Presenters

Sonia and Bronwyn are Melbourne based trainers and psychologists, and members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

Bronwyn

Bronwyn currently provides brief intervention support with youth at Headspace, and supervises university provisional psychologists. Bronwyn has worked in community health, private practice, online service delivery and leadership roles. She has assisted people with behaviour change goals concerning their substance use, mental health and psychosocial stressors. She has also undertaken clinical intervention roles within RCTs for problem gambling, parenting and child wellbeing.

Sonia

Sonia has worked as a clinical psychologist in private practice for the past 11 years with youth and adults. She has particular interest in trauma and has completed advanced accreditation in schema therapy. Motivational Interviewing is a core approach utilised amongst others when supporting clients with their recovery and wellbeing. Sonia further provides clinical supervision within community health organisations, and coaching and supervision as part of Vic Roads behaviour change programs. Sonia’s prior roles were in the drug and alcohol sector, and providing clinical intervention in a problem gambling RCT.

An email with some pre-workshop videos will be sent to registrants prior to the workshop. Please watch these before the workshop.
