Wheelchair Foundations is a blended learning course designed to build essential knowledge and clinical reasoning skills for therapists involved in wheelchair prescription and complex seating.
The course combines an online theory-based lecture with a face‑to‑face practical workshop to support learners in understanding posture, mobility, stability, and the translation of assessment findings into appropriate wheelchair and seating features.
Emphasis is placed on hands on practice using a structured assessment (including MAT), and clear clinical reasoning to support participant-centred recommendations.
Learning intentions
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Explain the principles of mobility, stability, and posture in wheelchair users and describe how these principles influence functional performance and safety.
Apply a structured Mat Assessment (MAT) approach to analyse posture, alignment, and movement, identifying key impairments that impact seating and mobility.
Describe key features of manual and powered wheelchairs and justify their selection based on client presentation, goals, and environmental demands.
Integrate pressure management principles by linking posture, cushions, and backrest features to skin integrity and comfort outcomes.
Translate assessment findings into clear clinical reasoning and product selection, including goal setting, scripting, and documentation for complex seating.
